Robyn DeHart has written an unconventional and exciting historical romance set in Victorian London, filled with intrigue, murder and a long lost princess.
I adore historical romances with a mystery thrown in. And I particularly love it when the characters are agents of the Crown. I love how the action takes place not in a ballroom but across the streets of London where the hero and heroine match their wits with villains who are up to no good. This story fit the bill perfectly.
I enjoyed Jason as a hero. According to Isabel and also the villian of the story, he's exceptionally handsome. Aside from being gorgeous, he's also a good man. A little too weighed down by guilt of his own making, added to a large sprinkling of pride which puts him in a difficult situation of his own making with Isabel. Still, he's honorable, protective and trying to do the right thing the whole time he's resisting the attractions of Isabel.
Isabel stole the show of this story for me. She's bright, brave and strong, but at the same time, I do not think I have ever encountered a more unassuming and modest heroine. She is genuinely unaware of her own allure and worth, and that makes her all the more special. I loved how open she was to Jason and how giving she was too, and ultimately, forgiving, because, well, Jason was a silly, pigheaded male.
This was an effortless read in spite of a few minor plot inconsistencies which perhaps would not have been an issue had I started the series from the beginning (which did not diminish the reading experience). Enjoyable and entertaining. I'm glad I picked up this book to read because I had forgotten what a superb writer Ms DeHart is. I truly enjoy her historical romances.
Eloping With The Princess is the third of the Brotherhood of the Sword series. While I jumped into this cold and having not read the first two books, this story stands well on its own, even with frequent mentions and appearances of characters from the other books. Of course, now that I've read this story, I want to go back and read Evie and Lilith's stories too and see how they find love with these men who serve Crown and country.

I don't read historicals anymore, my go to genre these days is PNR but thanks for the review. #getsocial17
ReplyDeleteHistorical is probably my least read sub-genre in romance but when I come across a good one, I do enjoy it a great deal. This one was great.
DeleteThis sounds like something that I would like. I need to add it to my list.

DeleteHow fun! I've recently started reading more historicals and I love "non-conventional" ones best. This cover catches my eye.

DeleteI do like when you can just jump into a series
ReplyDeleteIt helps. Sometimes it's daunting when you have to wade through the series from the start.
