Join the Deanna's World Advance Readers (ARC) Team & Support Authors | Read Books Before They're Released

Join Deanna's World Advance Readers ARC Team

Hello everyone,

For years, I’ve had the incredible privilege of being a partner in the creative process for hundreds of books. I get to see stories evolve from a flicker of an idea into a fully-realized world. It’s a part of my job that I cherish, and it’s a journey I’ve largely taken behind the scenes with my author clients. Today, I’m so excited to open that door a little wider and invite you to become an even more integral part of bringing these books to life.

Perfume Reviews #1: Do you want to smell like caramel and popcorn?

Perfume review

You guys, I am so burned out, it's not funny. I've been tackling a couple of huge sets of edits for author clients on the work front and my brain is kaput. I can't even blame menopause. I need to get my What Deanna Read done for February, but I'm going to wait till I have more brain power on that.

In the meantime, here's a little something I can share with you quickly because it's already done. A little bit of a cheat on my part since I'm lifting existing content, but at least it's funny...or I think it is.

Why I am reading a lot fewer ARCs

Reading with a cup of tea

The blogging landscape has changed a great deal over the five years that I have been blogging. Back in the day when I started, it was all about blogs promoting books and authors and blog tours. Now, it's much more about Facebook and Amazon advertising. The book industry has changed. How has this changed in terms of reviewing books for me?

Switching from Amazon US to Australia

Amazon logo

As you may know, Amazon has recently changed the purchasing process for customers in Australia. Starting July 1, 2018, customers in Australia will no longer be able to purchase physical products that need to be delivered into the country from Amazon.com, the main Amazon US site. Instead, customers will be directed to Amazon.com.au to complete their purchase. This is due to the implementation of new laws around the payment of Goods and Services Tax (GST) by foreign companies for products purchased overseas and delivered into Australia. The Australian government now requires companies like Amazon to pay GST on those transactions.

So you think you want to write reviews

Writing reviews is hard y'all! I can't even tell you the number of times my bud Bambi writes and tells me she needs to write a review and has nothing to say or that she simply just doesn't want to Write. Another. Review. When you read a lot of books and you write reviews, there's a lot of reviews to write.

When I first decided the start the blog, the idea of writing reviews was what scared me the most. Second was making sure I had enough content to keep the blog going but that's another post for another day.

Prior to the bloggity, I never wrote reviews. I might have written the odd short one on Amazon if the mood took me or if the book moved me in a significant way, but I never thought about the book from a review perspective when I wrote. I only gave a star rating for the books I'd read. It felt like too much of a commitment to actually write down what I felt or perhaps it was sheer laziness on my part.

Cookbook review: 14 Day Ketogenic Meal Plan by Gen Gale

Many of you may or may not know, but I also write a cooking blog called Daz in the Kitchen. I don't update that blog as regularly as I do Deanna's World but I recently reviewed a cookbook there. I thought I'd share it here for you as well. Let me know if you'd be interested in other cookbook reviews and I will be sure to share any future ones as well.

Note: this review is also posted on the Daz in the Kitchen blog.

Do not share the ARCs

The source of this blog post is a lot of things I've seen floating around social media which has somewhat disturbed me. It disturbs me because it is a betrayal of trust and it's not right. I do not know if people profit from it, I certainly do not, but I felt I needed to say something about it.

With having a book blog comes receiving Advanced Review Copies (ARCs) of books from various sources to review. I get ARCs in exchange for an honest review which I publish on my blog, and also Amazon and Goodreads. I get those ARCs for free. I do not get paid for reviews. I have never been offered money for reviews, nor have I received money for reviews.

Beauty Bites #3 - battle of the foaming cleansers

Welcome back to another instalment of Beauty Bites. This week is all about the foaming facial wash / cleanser. Here's a spoiler .... they are all fantastic.

cl

I started off with the Aldi Lacura Essentials Natural Skin Organic Argan Oil Facial Cleansing Mousse and ABSOLUTELY fell in love with it. It was so gentle and cleaned beautifully. It left my skin feeling soft and smooth, best of all, it did not sting my eyes and did a great job removing my eye makeup. I was instantly hooked on it and went back to Aldi to pick up a few bottles of it. I'm down to my last bottle now and needed to find an alternative to it since Aldi did not seem to be bringing it back anytime soon.

I hit up Priceline's website and did a search on foaming cleansers. I found:

They had others as well but some were more expensive than I was willing to pay for for a cleanser and some had some kind of acid in it, salicylic, AHA or BHA. I didn't want anything with acids in them, since I intended to use these on my eyes and I wanted them to be gentle, and not sting my eyes.

I have tried every single one of the above foaming cleansers and they work equally well. Their textures differ a little bit but not by much. When I say they differ, I mean some of them have slightly thicker foam than others, but for the most part, they are much of a muchness and work the same way.

This is what they all do:
  • They are gentle on the skin.
  • They cleanse well.
  • They do not sting my eyes.
  • They remove eye makeup very well (granted I do not wear difficult to remove waterproof mascara!).

I would recomment any one of the above cleaners. Of course, the most economical is the Aldi one, but that's difficult to find. The others are readily available from Priceline or other pharmacies that carry those brands, with prices ranging between $10 and $25.

Here's a little bit about each one:

Unfortunately, there's next to no information available online for this product. If you do find it at your local Aldi, that's great. I do highly recommend this. It's a very nice cleanser and very cost effective.
