I am starting June early, but don't count on this going up too early or even remotely on time because the month of June completely derailed for me—you can read about it here. So I cut it close with May reads. At the time of typing this, it's three weeks into June and I'm finally getting to the point where life is no longer chaos. I did get a white paper finished on my publishing partner business model, so go me!!
At this point, June reading has been dismal—refer to said mention of chaos above, but we'll see how the rest of the month plays out. I appreciate your patience and sticking with me. Mwah!
Small update as I prep this to post: It's the start of the third week of July, and July has been INSANE. You can read about it here, here and here. Things are still insane, but I've snuck away to prep this during team writing sprints to inject a small bit of normalcy into my life.

Right now, we're three quarters through the month of June and the reading has been sad. I don't have much to report.
At the three week mark...
I said last month about this point when I first started putting my What Deanna Read together for the month of May that there was nothing much to write home about. So far this month, there's even less. Good grief!
I finished two audiobook, another Toni Anderson narrated by the delicious Eric G Dove. The first and second books in her Cold Justice: Most Wanted series, Cold Silence and Cold Deceit. Cold Silence was brilliant and made even better by the narration. Cold Deceit was great too, but that was because the narration did a lot of the heavy lifting. Not that the story or writing itself weren't good—they were, but I found the heroine kind of ridiculous (she had her reasons, but that didn't make her any less ridiculous), and the hero had some hang ups he needed to get over. Overall, book 2 was still a solid listen and highly engaging and entertaining.
I've picked Dolls & Daggers by D L Darby for my next audiobook listen, but I'm not sold on it yet. It started with a laundry list of trigger warnings being read out to me by one of the narrators and that totally killed my vibe. I kinda turned out for the first five or so minutes of the audiobook itself and decided to leave it for now. I understand the need for trigger warnings and why the author chose to put it right at the beginning of the audiobook since this is marketed as a dark romantic comedy. But y'all listening to a laundry list of trigger warnings is not the same as listening to the glorious Thomas Locklear narrating a cereal box. Not. Even. Close.
Since I don't have much to report on the what I've read so far front—I'm not going to mention the duds, let's talk briefly about what I've got in the queue lined up to read soon or read next. I may or may not get to them in seven days left of the month as my work-reading editing queue is ridiculous.
Not in any particular order:
- Dawn In Eclipse Bay by Jayne Ann Krentz, selected out of desperation because of the dearth of good books out there to read right now (for me).
- Little Goddess by Layla Frost, since I've read the first two books and this last book in the series has been in my TBR forever.
- All Best Are Off by Jessa Kane. Y'all know I love Jessa Kane for a quick, spicy read. She dropped a new book so that's going to be my reward if I get a bunch of work stuff done.
- Worth the Fight by Anna Hackett. This is a work-read for final edits. By the time you read this, the book would have released.
- Saved by a God by Michelle Heard. This is the last book (I think?) in her Kings of Mafia series, but don't quote me on that. If you ever decided to read this series, read books 1 to 5, then skip 6 and 7 (no idea what happened there, but these were dreadfully written—it reads like someone else (not) Michelle Heard wrote it. The consensus on the critique from a bunch of mafia romance loving reader friends is pretty universal here), and pick the series up again at book 8. At book 8, I landed back on, here's the author whose writing I fell in love with. But if you're one of those people who need to read everything chronologically and can't skip books, well, consider yourself warned...
I also have some books on my re-read list, again, not in any particular order:
- Second Sight by Amanda Quick.It's the first book in her Arcane Society series and it's been so long, I need a refresh. Plus her books do stand the test of time, I've got not qualms about picking up and reading some of her older books. I'm partway through one written in 2001 and it's still a great read.
- Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh, because I love Kaleb Krycheck. That is all.
The rest of the month...
There wasn't much else aside from a couple very short, quick reads, plus I finished Cold Deceit by Toni Anderson, which as always, was marvelous. I'm on a bit of a binge with her audiobooks right now.
Oh, and I said that I wanted to read Dawn In Eclipse Bay by Jayne Ann Krentz, which is the second book in her Eclipse Bay trilogy. I finished it. It was wonderful. I'm glad that Ms Krentz has such a huge backlist that I haven't read yet.
I don't have much else to report on the book reading front for June. But fair warning, July is going to be dismal too.
