The Perfect Storm of Dumbassery | How an IT Director Who Built a Bank Short-Circuited Over an Editing Queue

Biology vs productivity B12 dumbassery

I recently wrote a long note on my Substack and spent some time debating if it should remain there as a journal entry or if it belonged here on the website. My Substack is a place for raw, professional journal-style updates, while I consider this website my permanent library for all my considerable and varied thought pieces on all things books, reading, writing, and publishing-related.

What Deanna Read #116: April 2026

What Deanna Read April 2026

I'm going to be honest and say that I do not know where I will land at the time I'm prepping this post since I'm being slightly organized and putting this together early. That said, it's been a slow month as I'm juggling work AND playing full time nurse to Hubby who is recovering from knee surgery. And he's much improved and doing very well, thank you for asking. But he better not get too used to me waiting on him hand and foot.

UPDATE: I am happy to report that prepping this early has meant that I am going to likely be the earliest I have ever posted a monthly What Deanna Read. Go me! I did read a few extra books by the time the end of April rocked around, so I'm pretty happy with where I landed overall.

Here's what I read in the last month.

Round Two 2026 ARCs from Deanna’s World | Historical Romance, Romantasy, Why Choose, Dark Psychological Thriller, Dark Mafia Romance Audiobooks

Deanna's World ARCs available

Hello, team!

Do you know what they said about best laid plans? Well, they very often go astray. For me, those plans led me down the garden path, up the side of one hill, over another mountain, and ultimately landed me playing nurse to Hubby, who is recovering from surgery. He’s recovering very well, hooray!

I want to thank you all for your patience and for bearing with me while I’ve been absent last month and most of this one. I am delighted to have several new books and audiobooks for you to read, listen to, and champion. You are every author’s best friend because of your enthusiasm, your love of good stories, and the support you show them. Believe me when I say they appreciate each and every one of you.

And before we get started, if you are an author and would like to submit your book for review consideration, click here. Here at Deanna’s World, we not only feature our very special author clients, but also all authors who would like to have access to the Deanna’s World Advance Reader (ARC) team.

The Doha Diaries #1: One-Way Tickets and Indemnity Forms, Confiscated and Stripped

Doha Diaries 1 one way ticket to crisis | Deanna's World

I’ve spent the last decade helping authors find the heart of their stories, acting as that voice on their shoulder between a messy first draft and a polished, ready-to-publish book. But lately, I’ve realized I’ve been ignoring a story of my own—one that’s been sitting on a dusty hard drive for nearly two decades. Okay, not dusty, it was in a drawer. I’m digging into my archives and treating my old journals with the same clinical yet caring eye I give my clients—this is terrifying. This will be a series of essays I’m calling "The Doha Diaries," where I’ll be sharing the raw, unvarnished, and very messy lessons of a year that broke me down and built me back up, all while showing you exactly how a publishing partner turns life’s chaos into a narrative that matters.

Settle in and buckle up, you’ll want your beverage of choice for this ride…

Notes from Deanna's Desk #2: Better Late Than Never

Notes from Deanna's Desk | Deanna's World

A long, long time ago (no, this is not the beginning of a Star Wars movie. Hah!)… when I first started my Substack, I thought it would be fun to do a recap of what I shared each week or month called “Notes from Deanna’s desk” of which I did exactly one post. Life, work, etc. I have no excuse really, but despite good intentions, that fell by the wayside very quickly. The reality is that if I have deadlines and life intrudes the first thing to go is social media, and the next thing to go is trying to maintain any semblance of a schedule on my website. And then I decided to hop off the social media hamster wheel, and that was that.

What Deanna Read #115: March 2026

What Deanna Read March 2026

What is this? Two months of early What Deanna Read posts in a row? The reason? Today in Easter Sunday and I'm technically off work while Hubby recovers from knee surgery. It's been a lot of stress, wrapping up work deadlines, clearing the deck, etc., so I can focus on Hubby. Oddly, I thought I'd have a bit more downtime too, but nope. Lots of running around like a mad chook fetching and caring for Hubby. And Hubby has been wonderful. He's doing great and recovering well. It's still a slow-ish and long road, but his surgeon (if you ever need hip or knee work done, Dr Mac is your guy!) is AWESOME. Right, onto the books...

Here's what I read in the last month.

The Soul in the Machine vs. The Squeak of the Wicker Chair | A Perspective on the Progression and Importance of Writing Craft

Mia Ballard scandal wicker chair squeak Deanna's World

For most of my career, I lived in a world built on logic gates and systems architecture. My daily rhythm was defined by the precision of project management. In that space, your first language isn’t prose; it’s the structured clarity of technical requirements. When you spend decades analyzing how machines process data, you develop a balanced neutrality toward technology. To me, a new piece of software isn’t a monster or a miracle. It is simply a tool—a calculator, a CAD program, or a more efficient way to map a workflow. So, when yet another scandal rocks the publishing industry, I like to take a moment or many to dissect it within the context of my role in this world. And this is where I've landed. Sit tight, it's one heck of a ride...

The Whirlwind, The Wins, and a Little Family Time | Q1 2026 Recap

Q1 2026 Recap: The Whirlwind, The Wins, and a Little Family Time

Hello everyone!

Can we just talk about how 2026 has been an absolute ride already? I’m currently in a serious "clear the decks" mode because life is about to get a bit more personal. Hubby is headed in for knee surgery in just five days, so I’m prepping to be MIA for a bit. I’m taking the first week of April to focus entirely on his recovery (ice packs and TLC on deck!), and then I’ll be sliding back into my work seat during the second week of April.

What Deanna Read #114: February 2026

What Deanna Read February 2026

This is rather unheard of... if recent posts are any indication, but I'm doing my February reads early. Why? Because I'm a crispy fried little critter and my brain is toast. I've taken today "off" which means I'm not working on deadlines and am, instead, catching up on small errands, admin, emailing my team, and maybe, just maybe, I'll even get round to invoicing my clients. That's important right? But first, books... and you'll see from my dismal reading efforts, this was not a good reading month.

Here's what I read in the last month.

What Deanna Read #113: January 2026

What Deanna Read January 2026

Y'all, I'm sooooo tired. January kicked off with a bang (very grateful) and February piled on top of it. I'm making an effort to get this post done before February runs out of days entirely. Go me! It's Saturday night and I'm supposed to be starting on the design of a cover for one of my author clients, but my brain is not cooperating. My brain can cope with putting this post together though.

Here's what I read in the last month.

First ARCs of 2026 from Deanna's World | Crime Thriller, Dystopian Science Fantasy, Dark Romance Audiobook

Deanna's World ARCs available

Hello team,

A slightly belated Happy New Year! I’ve missed you! I know I missed sending out the January ARCs, but I’ve been working hard behind the scenes with my author clients to make sure the first ARCs for 2026 are worth the wait.

I'd like to take a moment to remind you that there’s something incredibly special about the relationship between an author and an advance reader. You are the launch team author champions—the first ones to breathe life into these stories before they hit the shelves. This month, I’m thrilled to bring you a diverse mix of stories from some of my favorite people, plus a little something extra for the listeners among us. And if you're one to binge read, there's an entire series of ARCs available along with the latest book that's coming soon.

But before we get started, I want to ensure I’m still supporting the broader author community. If you are an author and would like to submit your book for review consideration, click here. While I dedicate my time to my author clients, I am passionate about helping upcoming authors find their audience by presenting their work to the Deanna’s World Advance Reader (ARC) team.

Beyond the Verdict, the Line in the Sand, and Maybe a Cell Door | Lauren Ashley Mastrosa aka Tori Woods

Banned on Amazon Convicted in Court The Price of Pushing Boundaries

One year ago, a single book set the publishing world on fire, but today, that fire has finally burned the house down. What started as an experiment in taboo erotic romance has officially ended in a criminal conviction that should terrify every author who thinks their imagination is untouchable. The verdict is in: the eighteen-plus disclaimer is dead, and the cell door is swinging open.

Around the World 175 Times with Gill the Literary Nomad

Around the world in 175 books

I’ve always said that reading is my ultimate escape, but y’all, I think Reader Gill might have actually figured out how to fold time and space. I was looking over her 2025 reading logs (she sends them to me every month, for which I am very grateful) and I was very suitably impressed. 175 books in a single year!

2025 Reflections and 2026 Roadmap. Navigating the Zigs and Zags of Publishing

2025 reflections recap 2026 roadmap

Happy New Year!!

Well, it’s the end of 2025 and the start of 2026, and today, as I write this, the end of the year is looming. I plan to post this on January 1st, and hopefully, I am organised enough to get it done in time. 2025 has been a very eventful year, so this is going to be a long one. Hang tight, grab a cup of coffee or your beverage of choice, and kick back. There’s a lot to cover.
