What Deanna Read #113: January 2026

What Deanna Read January 2026

Y'all, I'm sooooo tired. January kicked off with a bang (very grateful) and February piled on top of it. I'm making an effort to get this post done before February runs out of days entirely. Go me! It's Saturday night and I'm supposed to be starting on the design of a cover for one of my author clients, but my brain is not cooperating. My brain can cope with putting this post together though.

Here's what I read in the last month.

I have to say that January was a rather lean reading month for me... see intro above about it being very busy for work. Oof! That said I did read a decent-ish amount supplemented by some audiobooks, because yes!

Audiobooks is still reading.

Let's put this one discussion to bed once and for all over here in Deanna's World, shall we? Whether you read with your eyeballs, ears, or fingertips... You. Are. Still. Reading. As long as you are consuming a book in its originally written (sometimes slightly abridged) form, with words, whether you're using your eyeball, your ears, or your fingertips to process those words, absorb them, understand them, learn from them, or be entertained by them... You. Are. Reading.

On that note, I read with my ears a lot as you can see from the number of audiobooks I consumed. I wasn't sure about the one by Lee Child, but that's neither here nor there. Bite This and Love Lost by Michael Anderle was fantastic as I continue my love affair with Graphic Audio. And of course, there's nothing like the guilty and delicious pleasure of listening to Eric G Dove's voice in his narration of Toni Anderson's Cold Wicked Lies.

I was chatting with one of my Typo Hunter team members, Joni - we love Joni, she's awesome and a great team member. Well, Joni was telling me she mostly does audio and can listen to one audiobook a day. I'm lucky if I get 20 to 30 minutes of an audiobook in a day, so it takes me absolutely forever to get through an audiobook. My daily listening minutes would be very sad.

Aside from that, the other big standout of the month for me was the books from the Monster Bride Market series by various authors, including Ava York's Bought by the Raven King (I was initially attracted to this one because of the stunning cover art), Cara Wylde's Bought by the Revenant, and Ava York's Bought by the Void Walker. I've never been into the monster romance genre because a lot of them were strange, weirdly creepy, had obviously non-humanoid looking monster heroes I struggled to wrap my brain around, and had various strange (and many extra) appendages. This series, on the other hand, featured "monsters" and I use the term loosely because they all seem to have a more of a misunderstood Beauty and the Beast vibe to them. They focus more on the "people's" perception of the outward appearance of monstrosity as opposed to them being actual monsters. Are they like The Beast from Beauty and the Beast or are they like Dorian Gray from The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. The collection of authors in the Monster Bride Market series surprised me. I'd never read any of them before and I can honestly say that they are all skilled writers who write and publish well-crafted books. Color me impressed because I see and (try to) read so many books these days that are poorly written where the authors have not put the time and effort into studying their craft. I won't name names. Do not ask me who they are.

That's it for the month. I'm glad I got this done tonight. There was a momentary pause because my mummy called. We hadn't chatted in quite a few days leading up to today. Yesterday, she rang while I was getting ready for a meeting saying she hadn't heard from me in a few days, what was going on. I assured her I was fine, just busy with work. We usually at least exchange a few text messages on WhatsApp, even if we don't talk. But if she's in the country (mum and dad travel a lot), we talk most every day.

I hope y'all had a great month and a great reading month. Drop me a comment and tell me what you read. Until next month...

xoxo, D.
