Her bosom
heaved at an alarming rate as his rough hand found its way down to her
soft, yet wiry briar patch...
Can
you say briar patch in a romance novel? What about meat sword? That’s
what it is…a meat sword, right, all meaty and sword like, slaying
through the inner dungeons of a woman’s dark desires. What about
breasts? Do bosoms really heave?
God,
I have no idea what happens when private parts touch.
I’m
a virgin trying to write a romance novel and can’t seem to write past a
sex scene thanks to my lack of experience.
My
two best friends encourage me to drop the pen for a while and gain some
real life practice through multiple dating facets such as blind dates,
online profiles, and random hookups.
But
losing my virginity is proving to be tougher than expected…
This book is equal amounts cute and funny and quite a different kind of book than the ones I normally read just because it's more slapstick comedy than romance, or even romantic comedy. Think 40 Year Old Virgin with perhaps a young Cameron Diaz playing Rosie Bloom.
Rosie, in her efforts to write a romance novel and being a virgin, embarks on a series of dating adventures in order to lose her V card, or at least that is the intention, with some rather comical and sometimes disastrous results. All along the way, is her best friend Henry, who is obviously in love with her and hoping that she'd see him in that light.
Rosie is a dense idiot. I get that she's naive and inexperienced, and I should forgive her for being an idiot but it really is hard to read about a truly stupid heroine and just want to cheer for her. It makes me want to smack her upside the head instead.
Henry's not much better himself as he doesn't do himself any favors in the way he pursues Rosie but I think I blame Rosie for that more than I do Henry. Rosie has put so many boundaries and limitations to their relationship that it's almost impossible for Henry to get past the friend-zone. That said, I really like Henry. He's adorable and the way he behaves around Rosie, calling her "love", cuddling her and kissing her on the forehead, it was all very sweet.
Aside from that, this is a rather tongue in cheek poke at romance novels, with Rosie providing a constant commentary on what it's like in the romance novels she reads versus what's happening "in real life" so to speak. It brings a dose of realism to the genre of romance which frankly, I did not find particularly positive. I get that Ms Quinn was poking fun and laughing at some of the crazy things that happen in romance novels, but I like my romance to remain the fantasy that it is. I don't need someone coming along and dousing my fantasy world with a cold dose of realism.
There are some seriously laugh out loud moments in the book though, especially early on as Rosie explores the dating scene. Although, I am seriously into monogamy in my heroines, so the fact that Rosie dated so many guys during her, shall we say, experimental days, did not sit well with me. Yes, you can call me a prude, but I'm like that when it comes to my romance.
All in all a fun read but nothing you want to take too seriously. If you are looking for a good comedy, try this out.

About the author
Born in New York and raised in
Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter
eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to
bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air
and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because
they may be humped.
Once she started
commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three
years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life,
deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed
and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and
steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She
decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her
first novel, Caught Looking.
Now you can find the
spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady
residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four
legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery
stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring
home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!
