Let's chat and what I'm reading now #3

On today's bit of random, it's not that random. I want to talk about my book reading mojo. I was going to post about it in the Facebook group but this is a good spot for it. Y'all, I think I've lost some of my book reading mojo. I don't know if it's because work has been busy and I haven't had as much time to read or if the last book I read broke me. The book was one that I was anticipating for a long time, but it didn't work for me. The pacing dragged and I hated the heroine with a passion though I loved the heroes. The sex scenes were super hot which was a bonus, but oy! It took me absolutely forever to read it. A book that length usually would take me two days of reading in two sittings. With this book, it was a chore. I could only read a few chapters are a time, sometimes only one or two. I kept getting distracted (I think because the book was not holding my attention) and would go check social media and play around on my iPad. It was so frustrating as I tried and tried to finish the book, until I finally gave up and decided to stop torturing myself after five days of being stuck on the same book. At the rate I was reading, it would have taken me another eight days to finish the book and endless frustration. A book should not be such hard work. So... I think that book broke me. I'm reading a good book now and I'm enjoying it, but my concentration is shot and I can't help but feel sad about it. I want my book reading mojo back.

On the reading front, I am currently reading a new-to-me author, Terry Bolryder who writes shifter romance. I'm reading the first book in her Texas Dragons series called Cowboy Dragon. I was looking for new shifter romance authors to try that were like my two favorite authors, TS Joyce and Zoe Chant and someone recommended Ms Bolryder. She's similar-ish. Her writing is a little rougher than that of Ms Joyce and Ms Chant's but still enjoyable and readable. There were a lot of conflicting responses when I asked for information about Ms Bolryder's books, some people said it was more angsty and drama-filled than the other two authors I enjoy. Someone said it was too dark for her. Another said it was not as steamy. Having read the book myself now, I'm at about 70%, the angst and drama level is about the same, though I'm not happy about Harrison keeping something from Marian to keep her safe because you know that's going to come back and bit him in the ass. It's not dark at all by my standards and is pretty much the same as the other two authors on that level. And as for the steam, I'd say it's about the same too. The book itself is about Marian who is down on her luck going to Harrison to call in a debt he owes her father. The debt has now passed down onto her since her father has passed away. Harrison reluctantly takes her in since he's wary of strangers coming onto his land, and things progress from there. I must say, their relationship develops at a nice pace for me even though Marian and Harrison start out with quite a bit of animosity towards each other. That doesn't last long and they fall for each other at a speed that I like. I don't like it when authors drag out the characters falling for each other with lots of hissing and spitting in between. There's a sense of danger lurking right around the corner that adds to the tension of the story. I'm enjoying the book. I think I will read more of this author and read through the series. I'm hoping I will get my reading mojo back with a bit more reading too. This book is flowing much better and much faster than the book I was moaning about above.
