Review: Seven Nights in Provence by Lena De Savoie
It's with great regret to say I could not even get past the first few pages of this book and believe me when I say I truly hate it when I do not finish a book. It makes me sad. Unfortunately, I immediately hated the heroine Deva from the moment she was introduced and simply could not continue on. The writing seemed okay but it turns out the entire basis for the beginning of the relationship between Rupert and Deva simply does not work for me. It's my fault. I should have paid better attention to the blurb and read between the lines as to what the story was about. No matter Deva's circumstances and reasons for doing what she did, I had a hard time with the deception she perpetrated upon the people in the village and then blackmailing Rupert when he found out about what she had done. None of her actions in the opening chapter sat well with me.
Review: A Rogue to Avoid by Bianca Blythe
Through no fault of the author or the book or the story, this did not work for me. To put is simply, I'm going through a phase where Regency historical romances are not exciting me, so while this story started out quite humorous and engaging, it did not hold my attention. From the little I read, it looked like it would be a cute story. I did, however, skip to the end to see how Gerard and Cordelia had their happy ending.
Review: Death Before Dawn by Amelia Hutchins
The fact that this is a DNF is entirely my fault and the fault of the person who posted a review with HUGE spoilers in it without a spoiler alert. It totally ruined the book for me because I was all #teamjaeden and then ... I will leave it for you to read and find out. I already knew this book was going to be a crazy wild roller coaster ride if the first one was any indication but it's just so unfair that it was ruined for me. I did, as always, skip to the end to read the "happy for now" between Emma and her guy.
Review: Sweet Texas Fire by Nicole Flockton
Unfortunately, I did not give this book much of a shot. The premise of the story really wasn't for me and I didn't read much of it before I gave up. It is an enemies to lovers story and it's not one of those tropes that I enjoy. There also seemed like there was going to be a lot of drama llamas in the story and I simply was not up for that. That said, from the little that I had read, I thought the story itself was well written enough. For someone who doesn't mind the trope, I think they would enjoy this story.
Review: Safe Haven by Leeanna Morgan
I gave this book to 21% and just did not connect with the characters. The writing seemed a bit too clinical and I did not feel a connection to the characters at all, even when they were in dire circumstances and being chased by the bad guys. I did not feel it was suspenseful enough even though it was branded as a romantic suspense. It read more like a contemporary romance to me. One thing that I did find interesting and poignant was the treatment of Alzheimer's and how difficult it was for both the carers and the one suffering from the disease alike. I thought the way the disease was highlighted and treated was very well done. It did make me wonder if Ms Morgan had first hand experience with people who had either dementia or Alzheimer's.
Review: A Twist of Fate by Melanie Page
This story did not hold my attention. Partly because it was a historical Regency romance partly because it was bogged down with a lot of unnecessary detail which did not pertain to the main characters in the story but of their relations and other secondary characters. I found I did not have enough patience to wade through the story after getting through 10% of it and the hero and heroine had not even met. I also felt like the writing style and pace was too slow. It really dragged on for me.
There you have it. A few books that were a bit lacklustre for me.

I tend to finish the books I have started but there have been a few that have come close to being a DNF a story that is really slow will kill it for me and of course I must relate and like the hero and heroine or feel that I will get to like them :)

I really don't like not finishing books but I'm also learning not to force it if the book is not for me.
DeleteAw book sadness. Always a bummer when that happens but best to move on sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI'm learning to recognise early on if a book doesn't work for me and letting it go. It's too much of a chore to force it. Too many other good books waiting.
