Playing God

One of the coolest things about being an author is getting to play God. I relished this position when creating my new small town romance series, Outback Heat. I wanted a town in rural Australia that was only about two hours from a major centre and I wanted it to be sheep country with mountains and springs about an hour’s drive away. I wanted it to be in drought and threatened by bushfires when I needed it to be but also have rain and water in the springs for couples to get all hot and heavy in when required. It’s fair to say that the general area where I set it could have all those elements in one small place but the fact is, when you play God and you’re creating a place and a community that isn’t real, you can just make all that stuff up. Which is what I did. :-)

And Jumbuck Springs was born.

It has a population of about two thousand, a small hospital as well as a police station, a fire station and an ambulance service. But only two pubs. Anyone who’s been in outback Australia knows that most small towns have at least four pubs and they usually sit diagonally opposite each other on the main intersection in town. Essentially I was able to load Jumbuck Springs up with all the elements that should be in every small town but alas are not. But hey, fictitious town – yay!

Now, I’m a city girl. I’ve lived in cities for a long time but I grew up in a small town. So whilst I may have embellished and manipulated the environs of the town, I knew Jumbuck Springs. I knew the streets and the people and the smell and the scenery and the colour and the feel.  I knew what the footy field looks like and what the pub smells like and the hot shimmer of heat bouncing off the bitumen along the main drag in the middle of December. I know the monotony of miles of endless scrub and gum trees and the massive paddocks of the surrounding farms. I knew what the local politician looked like and the local baker and the local dentist. So I knew I could write the heart of a small town.

And I hope you agree. The first book in Outback Heat – Some Girls Do – released a couple of weeks ago and the second one – Some Girls Don’t – released yesterday.  Over the next month both Some Guys Need A Lot of Lovin’ and Some Girls Lie will also be released. Throughout you will meet the Weston family. From little sister Lacey to Jarrod to Marcus and finally Ethan all finding their HEA’s in the bosom of Jumbuck Springs. I won’t deny it gets pretty hot in the old town – sparks and passions flare on a regular basis between our couples but small town people have big hearts that need some big, big love.

cess

Amy, your little town reminds me of the town we live in now, and the region as well. The Hunter Valley is two hours outside of Sydney and has all those things you talk about ... plus WINE! I so get what you mean about small towns, though in reality, Cessnock, our closest town is not all that small.

And now a little about the book ...

Synopsis

Local television reporter Selena Durrum is in Jumbuck Springs for three days. Get in, see her grandmother, give her speech, and get out. Her career is about to hit big and she can’t afford any distractions. Especially not her childhood sweetheart…

Jarrod Weston, rural firefighter, isn’t worried about seeing the woman who’d done a midnight runner on him fifteen years earlier. It was a long time ago and he’s moved on with his life… right?

But neither of them were ready for their still potent attraction and the heavy pull of unfinished business. But then Selena gets offered the opportunity of a lifetime and once again has to choose between love and career… Will she go with her heart, or her head?

Excerpt

“You can leave with a clear conscience, Selena. I’m a big boy, I know casual sex when it lands in my lap.”
Selena blinked as his words slapped her hard in the face. Is that how he’d thought of it? Sex with Jarrod may have been a one off but there hadn’t been anything casual about it. Not for her anyway. “It wasn’t casual sex.”
He gave her an oh-really look. “How would you describe it?”
Was he serious? Did he really think she didn’t know that it had meant something to him too? “You are pissed that I’m going.”
“I’m not.” He shook his head. “I’m just debating your definition of casual. We had sex. We’re not in a relationship. Now you’re leaving with no intention of continuing to have sex with me. I think that’s the very definition of casual.”
“I think casual is about more than frequency or infrequency as the case may be. It’s also about...intention.”
He cocked an eyebrow. “Are you intending that we should do it more often? You going to...drop in for a booty call every now and then? Or were you hoping for a bit of goodbye action in the firehouse?”
Blood flushed to Selena’s cheeks. He was definitely pissed at her. “Oh nice, Jarrod,” she said, sucking in a breath ignoring the primal beat inside her that had leapt to life at his crude suggestion. “Real nice.”
She brushed past him heading for the door. She had better things to do than stand here and be cheapened by him.
“Shit. Selena...stop,” he said, one hand sliding onto her shoulder, the other over her hand on the knob, his naked front sandwiching her between him and the door. “Don’t go.”
Selena’s hand paused. Her breathing came thick and soupy. She pressed her forehead against the back of the door.
“I’m sorry,” he muttered, his lips brushing her temple.
Selena shut her eyes against the huskiness in his voice and the stir of his breath in her hair. “Do you honestly think this was just some booty call?”
“No...God...I’m sorry,” he muttered pressing a kiss to her temple this time. “I just...” his hand dropped from her shoulder sliding down her back to her hip, goose bumps fanning out in its wake. His other hand joined in, sliding onto her opposite hip. “These bloody shorts have been driving me nuts since the footy.”
He ran his hands onto her ass and squeezed. Selena bit down on her lip to stop herself from moaning as she gripped the door knob harder.
“All I’ve been able to think about,” he muttered, his hands gliding around to the front, his lips just behind her ear now, “is getting in them.”
“Jarrod,” she gasped as he rubbed her intimately through the fabric and things inside her shorts started to meltdown. “This is crazy...”
“I know,” he said, his voice strained. “God...don’t you think I know that?”
